15 June 2022 Snowdon Rail

It is the day that we head back to the mainland. We drive to the towering Snowdon Mountain (Llanberis bound). The parking area is across the Snowdon station. Another day, another £5 worth of coins for the slot machine.

It takes 30 mins to travel from where we were in Anglesey to Snowdon Railway Station in Llanberis. We started off 30 mins earlier, just to be caught smack in the middle of rush hour. It was not Singapore style kind of delay but still we had to allocate a couple more minutes more to our travel.

We parked at the Snowden carpark, its charges updated days ago. Now it was £11 for all day parking. That for a gravel car park which was horrendous.

I should have noted that the 'Village Car park' just 100m before the Railway Station cost £6 for 8 hours of parking and the one behind the ticketing office cost £8 for 8 hours. Both latter car parks come with time options. It was a complete ripoff.

We took the 11am diesel train , compartment G, to Cogwyn. It was a slow 45 min but the uphill ride offers spectacular views of the mountains and Menai Straits. Of special mention is the sheer amount of people trodding up the unshaded trail path to the 1000m odd mountain. The weather is gradually warming up and it felt uncomfortable even sitting in the train, what more walking for hours in the sun. It was almost windless and not a tree was in sight 180m onwards.

We stopped at Cogwyn and were given a 30 min break. Breaktaking and stupendous scenery! Though it costs £100 to get there, I was glad that we did it.

The descent was faster. At 1pm, we scrounge for food at the cafe next to the station. There was no gf food at all, so all I had was potato chips with mayo.

                   Ceunant Mawr Waterfall

We trooped to the nearby waterfall, a very short walk up. H loved the waterfall so it was a good decision to include that in the plans.

We made a stop at Morissons for supplies. I opted to return via the Menai Bridge.

It was 4pm back at Glan Morfa. Pat did a mini car wash. Temperature has peaked for the month and we basked in the evening sun in the front yard. It was quite fun.

Dinner was assorted pizza. H loved the benches at the end of the cottage so we decided to eat there. Not a bad idea, eating in the chilly, sunlight garden surrounded by mountains.
